The town of Telč was founded by noblemen of Hradec in 1339 but in the first half of the 13th century, there was already a settlement, in the place of current Old Town, and royal court with a guard tower and a church. This Romanesque tower still stands; it is a part of the Church of Holy Ghost. And near the tower, it is the place where the house number 31 is located.
It certainly was here at the Gothic times but the Romanesque structural elements found in the cellar suggest that the beginnings date back to an earlier period. Perhaps, it used to be a part of the royal court premises. Unfortunately, in 1530 the town hall burnt down with all the town archives containing the records. New records started to be kept in 1531.
The house exchanged a large number of owners. These included merchants, aldermen, a butcher, a writer as well as a button craftsman. The last-mentioned not only was no button-maker but he even turned out to be a faker and a bigamist. In the house beer used to be brewed, trade carried out and there used to be a glass workshop. Every owner adjusted the house according to his needs and possibilities.
When Ms Anna Hanzlová, a sculptor, discovered the house, it was in a considerably neglected condition. But still it gripped her attention so much that she decided to buy it and set it in order. During a sensitively elaborated restoration, many interesting points regarding its construction as well as its equipment were disclosed (vessels and tiled stove fragments, etc.) Also a beautifully painted beam ceiling was revealed.
You can come and see everything closely.
